    Notes:
Davis Hall (1825-1905), born in Hanson, Massachusetts, grew up without knowing his mariner father, who died shortly after Davis was born. His family moved to Nantucket after his mother remarried.

At age of 21, Hall was one of seven men who sailed the 44-ton fishing schooner Mary and Emma to California during the Gold Rush, the smallest vessel to sail around Cape Horn.

Eventually Hall returned to Nantucket. He worked for the Massachusetts Humane Society rescuing ships in distress before enlisting in the Union Army in 1862. In 1877 he was appointed to the crew of the South Shoal Lightship, where he learned the art of basket making. He is credited with helping develop the oval form of Nantucket baskets. His baskets are known for their tight weave and beautiful symmetry, as evidenced here.
