    Richard Andrew specialized in murals, landscapes and portraits, and he was a department head at the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston. He and his wife, Lucy Pew Andrew, worked and lived mostly in Boston and Gloucester, Massachusetts.

    Andrew studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School in Boston, the Académie Julian in Paris, and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. He was a pupil of Jean Leon Jerome (1824-1904) and Jean Paul Laurens (1838-1921) in Paris and was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists and the Gloucester Society of Artists. He exhibited with the Albright Art Gallery, the Lowell Art Association in Lowell, Massachusetts, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the St. Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, Missouri, the Worcester Museum of Art in Worcester, Massachusetts, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Boston Art Club and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

    Five of Andrew's murals are in the Hall of Valor of the Massachusetts Statehouse in Boston: "The Decoration of the Colors of the 104th United States Infantry", "Veterans of the Sixth Regiment Memorial, Introduction and Records of Duty", "Veterans of the Sixth Regiment Memorial, Marching Through Baltimore", "Veterans of the Sixth Regiment Memorial, Landing in Puerto Rico" and "Veterans of the Sixth Regiment Memorial, Record of Duty Panel II".

    The Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, Massachusetts has three oils in their collection: "Self-Portrait", "Sunlit Rock" and "Thatcher's Light". "Autumn", a large decorative mural, is in the collection of the Furman University Library in Greenville, South Carolina.
