ROCKING CHAIR FROM JOHN F. KENNEDY'S PERSONAL SUITE AT THE CARLYLE HOTEL, NEW YORK
Oak frame under a dark mahogany stain, with a caned seat and back. Back height 43.5". Width 26". Depth 20".
President Kennedy used rocking chairs, per the recommendation of Dr. Janet Travell, to alleviate chronic and severe pain in his back, which he injured during World War II while heroically rescuing the crew of PT-109 after it sank in the Solomon Islands. Sitting for long meetings aggravated his back, so he commissioned a number of rocking chairs to use in the White House and at his various personal residences. This chair was used at his suite at the Carlyle, sometimes referred to as the "New York White House" given how frequently he stayed there. It was at the Carlyle that he decided to invite Robert Frost to recite a poem at his Inauguration.
Kennedy conducted many meetings while seated in rocking chairs, famously quipping, "It gives you a sense of motion without any sense of danger".
