  • Provenance: Illustrated:
Double-page color spread in The Holy Grail of Yachting: The Art of the America's Cup by Alan Granby and Janice Hyland, published by the America3 Foundation, 2017, p. 76-77.

    Notes:
In one of the biggest upsets in sporting history, the Americans lost the 1983 America's Cup race to the Australians, failing to defend the trophy for the first time in 25 challenges over 132 years. The 1987 race would mark the first time the Cup would not be held in America or defended by the New York Yacht Club, so it took on extraordinary significance and garnered enormous global interest. The series took place off Fremantle, Western Australia, and the American challenger
Stars & Stripes 87 , skippered by Dennis Conner, beat the Australian defender Kookaburra III in a four-race sweep. Conner thus became the first person both to lose the America's Cup and then win it back. Of note, it was also the last time 12-meter class yachts were used in the America's Cup.

The porcelain base seen here is modeled after Sydney Opera House, which is formed as three groups of interlocking vaulted "shells". Construction of the Opera House began in 1958, following plans of visionary architect John Utzon. It was completed October 20, 1973 and has since been recognized as a worldwide architectural masterpiece.
