  • Provenance: Notes:
The Sailors' Snug Harbor of Boston was founded in the 1850s as a retirement home for elderly, infirm or impoverished sailors who could no longer serve as active seamen. The facility was first located in the Germantown section of Quincy and then moved to Powder Point, Duxbury, Massachusetts, where it merged with the National Sailors' Home. When the need for such a retirement home diminished in the 1970s, the property was sold and the contents sold at auction. The proceeds established a charitable foundation that provides financial assistance in support of seamen and fishing families of Massachusetts. This bell is believed to have been made by the Hooper foundry, given the Hooper's connection with the original Germantown location, and sold at auction in the 1960s or 1970s as the Duxbury location was being disbanded.
