SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH "A WIGWAM OF PATAGONIA"

Depicts three men in a canoe, one wearing a headdress, rowing past a palm tree-lined village comprised of nine wigwams at the foot of mountains or volcanoes. Titled below scene. Rich patina.
Length 6.25".
Condition: Base cut flat. Scattered light areas of typical wear, but generally very well preserved.

    A Scrimshaw Collection Originating on Nantucket Island.

    Note:
    The structures seen here are very similar to those depicted in "Fuegians and wigwams", an illustration in Darwin's Voyage Round the World. He describes them as resembling "in size and dimensions, a haycock". Fuegians are one of three tribes of indigenous inhabitants of the Tierra del Fuego region of southern Patagonia.
