SCRIMSHAW WHALE''S TOOTH Mid-19th Century
Obverse depicts two full-rigged ships at sea, one in the foreground and one in the distance. Both ships have gunports and are flying large flags off their sterns. The foreground ship''s flag has a solid field and an X in the canton. The reverse depicts a ship entering a busy port with a large lighthouse-like structure at its mouth and billowing smokestacks in the distance. Length 7.75".
Note: The coastline of the port seen on the reverse is similar to that of Whitby, England, when it was a hub of the 18th and 19th Century British whaling industry. A 19th Century painting depicting the port, part of the permanent collection of the Whitby Museum, provides a similar view of the coastline. Ships in the painting are flying flags similar to those seen on the obverse of this tooth, possibly stylized British ensign flags.
