Winfield Scott (1786-1866), known as "Old Fuss and Feathers", served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army for twenty years, longer than any other person in U.S. history. Considered the best commander of his time, he served from the War of 1812 though the Civil War. A national hero after the Mexican-American war, he was nominated by the Whig Party as a presidential candidate in 1852, over its incumbent Millard Fillmore. Although he lost the election, he remained a popular figure in American politics and culture. He attained the rank of Major General in 1841 and in 1855, by special act of Congress, he was given a brevet promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, the first person after George Washington to hold that rank.
