SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH Mid-19th Century
Obverse depicts Winfield Scott on horseback. Subject is identified in banner at tip as "M.G. Winfield Scott". Scott is in full dress uniform including a plumed hat. Reverse depicts standing Liberty wearing a galea and holding an American shield on her left side. Banner at tip inscribed "Liberty". Depiction of the ground wraps around the circumference. Both sides finely executed and nicely shaded. Nice patina. Length 6.75".
Winfield Scott (1786-1866), known as "Old Fuss and Feathers", served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army for twenty years, longer than any other person in U.S. history. Considered the best commander of his time, he served from the War of 1812 though the Civil War. A national hero after the Mexican-American war, he was nominated by the Whig Party as a presidential candidate in 1852, over its incumbent Millard Fillmore. Although he lost the election, he remained a popular figure in American politics and culture. He attained the rank of Major General in 1841 and in 1855, by special act of Congress, he was given a brevet promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, the first person after George Washington to hold that rank.

Condition: Approx. .25" x .75" chip at base of reverse has been reglued, with some remnants of glue still present along base. Base with three additional old chips, mostly affecting interior. Faint age crack on obverse extends from base approx. 2". Additional smaller and relatively unobtrusive age cracks extending from base. Age lines and old very shallow chip at tip. Chips and cracks at both base and tip are almost entirely outside the images.
This item will not be shipped internationally without a CITES permit. Obtaining CITES and any other necessary permits is the obligation of the buyer.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide shipping quotes until the invoice had been paid in full.
In house shipping is offered exclusively though UPS. All items are shipped with UPS insurance (max. $50,000). UPS insurance is billed at $2.70 for the first $100 and at $0.90 per hundred afterwards. Eldred's charges a minium $15 handling fee per package plus actual UPS shipping charges.
COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred's facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/per day storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer's account minus auction and storage fees.
