SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH Circa 1831
Obverse engraved with inscription "This Tooth Taken from a Whale That Yielded 60 bbls of Sperm oil by the Sarah-Elizabeth In the Latitude of 31.00N Longitude 154E September 17th 1831". Reverse with scene of the "Eddystone Light House", an island lighthouse, with a lighthouse keeper by the doorway, multiple birds flying around the tower, a pulley system near the water and a small rowboat with sailors offshore. A scallop and pique border encircles the tip and a sawtooth and pique border encircles the base. Length 5.75".
It is believed the Sarah - Elizabeth or Sarah and Elizabeth was built in 1775 in Swan Creek, Maryland, but primarily served as a British whaler out of Hull, one of England's busiest whaling ports, until she was destroyed in a gale off Greenland in 1857. The crew was rescued from the shipwreck by crew members of the whaleship Diana , which was under the command of Captain John Gravill, father of the captain of the Sarah - Elizabeth. Her long history also includes being boarded by a Royal Navy press gang in 1794 and being involved in a skirmish with a French privateer in 1805. British whalers frequented the whaling grounds off Japan in the 1820s and early 1830s, which correlates with the date and latitude and longitude inscribed on this tooth. Eddystone Lighthouse is located nine miles south of Rame Head, Cornwall, England, in a stretch of dangerous rock formations. The lighthouse depicted on this tooth closely resembles the third lighthouse on the site, known as "Smeaton's Lighthouse", an engineering marvel that operated from 1759 to 1877.
