SHERATON MAHOGANY AND BIRD'S-EYE MAPLE VENEER SIDEBOARD ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN AND THOMAS SEYMOUR

An exceptional example of Seymour work, with an effective use of bold contrasting veneer and subtle refinements of the outset legs and curved knee brackets that elevate it to a premier form. Edge of top banded with flame birch lunette veneer, often seen in Seymour pieces. Inscribed "3" in pencil on a drawer bottom, the handwriting consistent with Thomas Seymour's. Case divided into three sections by turned and reeded pilasters. Five drawers over a two-door cupboard flanked by bottle drawers and single-door cupboards. Replacement but period lion's-mask brass hardware. Reeded tapered legs.
Height 42". Width 69". Depth 24.25".

    Notes:
Father and son cabinetmakers John and Thomas Seymour brought their English-trained skills to New England upon their arrival to Portland, Maine in 1784. In 1793 they relocated to Boston and opened a workshop producing furniture of the highest quality for city elite eager to possess pieces created in the latest interpretations of English designs in the en vogue Federal style.

John retired around 1808 and passed away in 1818. Under Thomas's direction, and with the rising interest in English Regency style, the designs became more understated and refined.

Around 1817, Thomas was beset by financial problems. He was hired by Isaac Vose and Son as their foreman in 1819. Details about the rest of Thomas's career become vague after Isaac Vose, Jr. closed his cabinet business around 1835, though it is believed he worked for cabinetmaker William Fisk for a period. He died in Lunenburg, Massachusetts in 1848.
