SHIP'S LIQUOR CHEST 19th Century
Iron-bound oak chest with iron bail handles. Painted on cover "JB Hull USN Derby Comd". Includes six liquor bottles, two tumblers and two stemmed port glasses. Glasses fitted within a tray that lifts to reveal an additional five liquor bottles. Bottles and glasses decorated with matching gilt and frosted diamond design. Chest height 11.75". Width 16.75". Depth 12.5".
Commodore Joseph Bartone Hull, elder brother of Isaac Hull who commanded the U.S.S. Constitution during its famous battle with the H.M.S. Guerriere
, moved steadily up the ranks of the U.S. Navy from the time of his appointment as midshipman in 1813. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1825, commander in 1841, captain in 1855 and commodore in 1862. Later on he was superintendent of gunboat construction in St. Louis, Missouri, then commandant of the Philadelphia Navy Yard. From 1869 to 1873 he served has a lighthouse inspector. It is believed he was born in Westchester, New York but grew up primarily in Derby, Connecticut. He died in 1890.

Condition: Slight age splitting of case. Three bottles with chips to mouth rim. One with a single small chip, another with two small chips and the last with larger chip (measures 5/8" at widest part) and repair at neck.
