SIGN AND OTHER MEMORABILIA COMMEMORATING THE DISCOVERY OF THE WRECK OF THE TITANIC Circa 1985
Sign marked "R/V Knorr Agor-15 Voyage 115-3 Operation Titanic Aug. 15-Sept. 9, 1985 W.H.O.I. IFREMER" surmounted by a plexiglass sign with Office of Naval Research logo and decorated with stickers and images of American and French flags. Sign signed by various members of the team including Bob Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who led the expedition. Also includes metal fragments purportedly from the Titanic, two signed Styrofoam cups that shrank to miniature size due to ocean pressure, a W.H.O.I. pin, two mounted photographs of the wreck and a mounted photograph of the team onboard the Knorr surrounding the sign. Sign 29.5" x 59".
Provenance:
Consigned by a member of the expedition.
Although attempts to discover and salvage the wreck of the Titanic began almost immediately after it sank in 1912, it wasn't until September 1, 1985 that she was found, lying 12,500 feet below sea, 370 miles southeast of Newfoundland. A joint French-American expedition team, led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER and Robert Ballard of W.H.O.I., was successful in locating the wreck by using Argo, a remote-controlled deep sea vehicle equipped with sonar and cameras, and Jason, a tethered robot that could roam the sea floor. The Argo / Jason system was sponsored by the U.S. Navy because of its military applications, many of which are still classified. Shrinking Styrofoam cups by ocean pressure is said to be a favorite ceremonial pastime of oceanographers.
