TEN 19TH CENTURY RHODE ISLAND BROADSIDES
1) "In General Assembly, House of Representatives, January 1844". Pertains to claims for French "spoliations". Hand-signed "Henry Bowen" as secretary. Overall 16.25" x 22".

2) "Fellow-Citizens of Rhode-Island". Dated Providence, August 22, 1829. Signed in print "Tristam Burges". Supports Pearce's re-election to Congress. 15.75" x 15.25".

3) "Electors of the Western District! Read and consider!!! At a meeting of gentlemen of the Whig party, and of citizens generally, favorable to the election of Hon. Wilkins Updike, to Congress, held at Kingston Court House, Aug. 11, 1847". Rare Whig party broadside urging the election of Updike to Congress and leans heavily on his anti-slavery sentiments. 18.75" x 12.25".

4) "To the Electors of the Western Congressional District." Signed "A Citizen of Narragansett". Circa 1847 broadside supporting Wilkins Updike's election to U.S. Congress. 18.75" x 12".

5) "Standing Rules, Of the House of Representatives of the State of Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations, May Session, A.D. 1843." Signed in print "Joseph S. Pitman, Clerk". Two columns of text with rules about the Speaker, Standing Committees and "Decorum and Debate". 17" x 13.75".

6) "Corruption further Exposed! Falsehood Refuted!" Printed at the Herald Office, Providence, circa 1830. Double-sided. Accuses Lemuel H. Arnold and James F. Simmons of corruption surrounding the Providence and Pawtucket Turnpike.

7) Double-sided, titled on one side "Thomsonism not yet dead in R. Island." and "Please Read and Circulate. We do cure many whom others cannot; while we in-jure none, and so we print it." on other side. Circa 1836. Pertains to J.A. Brown and the practice of Thomsonian Treatment, which prescribed steambaths and herbs over traditional medicine to cure ailments. 16" x 11".

10) "Correspondence Between the Editor of the Providence Journal, And Rowland G. Hazard." Circa 1854. Double-sided, with illustration of a printer at a press and advertisements on reverse. Hazard was a Rhode Island mill owner, politician and abolitionist. In a speech made in 1854 he criticized the Stonington Railroad Company for charging discriminatory rates for both freight and passengers, and the railroad retaliated by barring Hazard from riding its trains. Resolutions passed by the local town council in reaction to Hazard's treatment are said to have influenced the 1886 Interstate Commerce Law. 22" x 13.5".

Condition: Age-typical wear, including toning, foxing, soiling, creasing, uneven edges, etc.
1) Folding and double-sided, possibly intended to fold and mail, though no address or postage marks are present. Three areas of loss, all smaller than .75" x .25".
2) Small tears at edges, none extending into text. Small area of loss at intersection of fold lines.
3) Unevenly creased. Ink marks on reverse.
4) Evidence of water damage. Tear with some loss at bottom edge. Smaller areas of loss along horizontal fold lines, mostly near edges.
5) Unevenly creased. Uneven toning, with darker band along perimeter in addition to four large areas of browning on upper and lower margins.
6) Unevenly creaseed. Some tears.
7) Unevenly toned/stained. Tear along center horizontal crease. Some chipping/loss of lower margin.
8-9) Both with significant browning and loss.
10) Unevenly creased. Multiple areas of loss on left margin. Uneven toning, with significant browning on left and right edges.
