  • Provenance: Notes:
Edward Howland Robinson Green (1868-1936), also known as Colonel Green, was the only son of the notoriously miserly financier Hetty Howland Robinson Green (the "Witch of Wall Street"), the only daughter of the richest whaling family of New Bedford, Massachusetts. In 1892 Ned moved to Texas at his mother's request to represent her in several railroad business ventures. He took a deep liking to the state and was active in business, social and political circles, being suggested as a possible Republican candidate for governor in the early 1900s. He was appointed an honorary colonel by Governor Oscar B. Colquitt, giving him the nickname "Colonel Green". Toward the end of his mother's life, and after her death in 1916, he spent most of his time on the East Coast, famously building Round Hill, a massive estate in Darmouth, Massachusetts, and assembling immense stamp and coin collections.

Charles Sumner Ashley, Sr. (1858-1941) was mayor of New Bedford for 25 terms between the years 1890 and 1936.
