1) Portrait of Thurber painted by David Swasey (American, 20th Century). Thurber depicted wearing a necktie with the flying fish insignia of the Ocean Cruising Club. Burgees of the Cruising Club of America, New York Yacht Club, Ocean Cruising Club and Rhode Island Yacht Club are depicted in the upper right corner. Signed lower right. Oil on canvas, 27.75" x 24.75" sight. 2-5) Four cloth burgees: New York Yacht Club, Ocean Cruising Club, Cruising Club of America and Watch Hill Yacht Club. 6-7) Two nylon burgees: Rhode Island Yacht Club and Hawaii Yacht Club. 8) Pewter trophy tankard inscribed "Bristol Yacht Club June 15, 1901 3rd Prize 5th Class won by Flying Fish Fred. B. Thurber". Height 3.75". 9) Silver plated placard inscribed "'Sea Bird' 25'-7 1/2" O.A. 21'-1 1/2" W.L. 3'-7" Draft 8'-4" Beam Presented to Fred. B. Note: Frederick B. Thurber (1883-1971) was a passionate yachtsman best known for the Sea Bird's transatlantic crossing in 1911. Along with Thomas Fleming Day and Theodore Goodwin, Thurber departed Providence, Rhode Island on June 11 and arrived in Gibraltar on July 17. The Sea Bird was a twenty-five foot yawl designed by Day, C.D. Mower and C.D. Huntington. Thurber was also the first certified gemologist in the United States and was president of the Tilden-Thurber Company from 1924-1962.
