THOMAS SULLY

Pennsylvania/England, 1783-1872

Portrait of Jared Mansfield, professor of mathematics, West Point.

Unsigned. By descent in the Mansfield family. According to family, Mansfield was so beloved by his students at West Point that the cadets commissioned Sully to paint his portrait. Purportedly there are three versions, one at West Point, one at Yale University and this version, which Sully gave to Mansfield as a thank-you for introducing Sully to Thomas Jefferson, who became a close personal friend.
Oil on canvas, 30" x 25". Framed 33" x 27.5".
Condition: Relined. UV light inspection reveals some small spots of paint restoration.
