Portrait of the New York Yacht Club steam/sail yacht Avenel flying the American flag off her stern and the New York Yacht Club burgee off her foremast. Sandy Hook lightship off her bow. Nicely executed deckworks, trailboards and figures on deck. No visible signature. Housed in a period frame with plaque marked "Ship "'Avenel' Thomas Willis 1850-1912". Includes a copy of a photograph of the ship from the Mystic Seaport Museum archives.
The Avenel was a wood screw schooner steamer yacht designed by Philip Elsworth and built by Theo. Durant (or Durand), New York, in 1888. She was owned by H. Raymond.

Condition: No damages noted. Not examined out of frame or under UV light. Gordon Titcomb receipt indicates there is a small amount of inpainting to sky and some rigging threads have been replaced.
