THREE ILLUSTRATED ROYAL NAVY LOG BOOKS 1868-1873
Kept by F.O. Passy, who served aboard the H.M.S. Prince Consort as a cadet and midshipman from 1868 to 1870, and aboard the H.M.S. Druid as a sub-lieutenant from 1872 to 1873.
1) "Log of H.M.S. Prince Consort 4045 Tons. 1000 H. P. Commanded by Wm. Armytage Esq. Captain and Kept by F.O. Passy N.C. & Medn." Details the ship's voyages in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Fourteen tipped-in hand-drawn maps, several with color washes. Twelve tipped-in elevation drawings in pencil, ink wash or watercolor. Two pasted-in ship photographs. One tipped-in watercolor illustration of a Maltese boat. 246 pages. Half-morocco folio volume (12.75" x 8.25") with embossed boards and gilt title.
2-3) Two-volume log for the maiden voyage of the H.M.S. Druid along the Gold Coast from 1872 to 1873. Details the ship's involvement in the Third Anglo-Ashanti war, with descriptions of the bombardments of Aquidah and Appolina and a battle at Elmina. Mentions General Garnet Wolseley aboard the ship and time spent at Cape Coast Castle. Eleven tipped-in watercolors, including the bombardment of Aquidah, Ashanti fetish swords, butterflies, ship portraits and a Portuguese man-o'-war. Seven tipped-in hand-drawn maps, including the battle at Elmina. Five tipped-in drawings, including South African cattle, rigging and a plan of the ship's bow. Folio volume (13" x 8.25") bound in velum.

Condition: Age-typical wear throughout. 1) Spine cracked and Morocco partially detached. Scattered minor foxing. Pages for April 9 and 15, 1868 pasted together. June 12, 1868 lacking tipped in element. July 28, 1868 with page sliced along gutter. Page torn out between April 1 and 5, 1869. April 20, 1869 page damaged. June 20, 1869 lacking tipped in element. November 18, 1869 lacking tipped in element. 2-3) Very good condition, with light wear. The watercolor of the bombardment of Aquidah unattached.

We require prompt payment and removal of your purchases as stated in Paragraph 12 of the Conditions of Sale. If you plan to pick up your purchases, please call ahead and we'll make every effort to have your items ready. Our physical address is 1483 Route 6A, East Dennis, MA. Pick up of smaller items at our Mystic, CT location is also available with advance notice.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide shipping quotes until the invoice had been paid in full.
In house shipping is offered exclusively though UPS. All items are shipped with UPS insurance (max. $50,000). UPS insurance is billed at $2.70 for the first $100 and at $0.90 per hundred afterwards. Eldred's charges a minium $15 handling fee per package plus actual UPS shipping charges.
COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred's facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/per day storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer's account minus auction and storage fees.
