THREE PACIFIC ISLAND FISH HOOKS 19th/20th Century
1) Carved bone fish hook in a graceful curved shape, possibly emulating a predatory fish or shark, with two barbs at one end, three at the opposite end and one on the shank. Pierced for possible use as a pendant. Possibly a Maori "hei mataua" or a similar symbolic carving. Length 3".
2) Carved bone fish hook with three grooves on shank. Length 2.88".
3) "Shark hook" made from a single V-shaped piece of hardwood bound in rope, possibly coconut fiber. One side of V with large barb; other side affixed to a length of rope supported by a wooden dowel. Although referred to as a shark hook, this style of hook was used in Micronesia to catch ruvettus fish in deep waters outside reefs. Overall length approx. 24".
