  • Provenance: Notes:
Charles H. Wood is known for these types of finely engraved nautilus and turban shells, purportedly done with just a pen knife. He was aboard the Great Eastern on her maiden voyage from England to New York, during which he produced personally inscribed souvenirs for other passengers. Examples of his work were presented to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Crystal Palace, London, and the Great International Exhibition of 1862.

The Great Eastern was an iron sail, paddle wheel and screw-propelled steamship, by far the largest ship ever built at the time of her 1858 launch. She was a passenger liner between Britain and Australia and North America for several years before being converted to a cable-laying ship, notably laying the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866. She ended her career as a floating music hall in Liverpool and was broken up in 1889.
