    Reference:
Naval Heritage and Heritage Command notes the U.S.S. "Wasp" was built by Cross & Merrill, Newburyport, Massachusetts, and launched September 18, 1813. She saw action against "Frolic" in the Atlantic on October 18, 1812, while under the command of Master Commandant Jacob Jones. "Frolic" was under Commander Thomas Whinyates.

Strong wind caused a heavy sea on the day of the battle. Both vessels carried a main armament of short-range carronades. There was no attempt at maneuvering to gain advantage before the fight. They closed to within range and opened fire. The "Wasp"'s crew fired low, into their opponent's hull, while "Frolic"'s gunners fired high, to disable their enemy's rigging. After 22 minutes, "Wasp"'s rigging was so damaged the ship was unmanageable. "Frolic" was also severely damaged, and the crew had suffered heavy casualties. "Frolic" eventually collided with the American ship, and when the American sailors boarded her they found every British officer and more than half the crew were wounded or dead. The Americans captured the British vessel, but shortly thereafter both vessels were captured by a British ship of the line that happened upon the scene of the battle.
