WHALE DISPLAY PLAQUE BY WHALEMAN GEORGE GRANT Early 20th Century
Twelve carved and painted half-body whale silhouettes, six adult and six calves, mounted on a plywood board painted blue-green with a rope border. Whales are identified in pencil verso. Inscribed in pencil verso "Hand Made By: Captain George Grant Nantucket Island Mass". Note affixed to reverse inscribed "Hand Carved by Capt. George Grant of Nantucket Island Mass. at age of 80 years. Harpooned his first whale at 19 yrs of age." Plaque 8.5" x 10.75".
George Grant was the youngest son of Captain Charles Grant, considered by the island newspaper Inquirer and Mirror
as "the most famous whaleman". He went to sea in 1825, at age 11, and worked his way up the ranks, retiring as a captain in 1881. His wife and children often accompanied him on his voyages. George Grant was born in 1857 and sailed and served as a whaleman aboard his father's ships until he was 17, at which time he signed on with the Mary Frazier
. His career lasted thirty-three years, and after retirement, he worked at a lifesaving station and as a curator of the Nantucket Whaling Museum. He died in 1942.

Condition: Some whales slightly loose from plaque but all are still attached. The three adult whales on the right have breaks at their tales.
