FIVE RARE VOLUMES OF LITERATURE
1) The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. by Washington Irving (N.Y.: C.S. Van Winkle, 1819). Believed to be the Second American Installment. Commonly referred to as "The Sketch Book", the collection, published serially, contains 34 essays and short stories in its entirety, including "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". This volume contains "English Writers on America", "Rural Life in England", "The Broken Heart" and "The Art of Bookmaking". O. Original brown wraps, with title "The Sketch Book" and "No. II....Price 62 1/2 cents" on front cover and advertisement for No. III on back cover.

2) Dermot Mac Morrogh, or The Conquest of Ireland; An Historical Tale of the Twelfth Century in Four Cantos by John Quincy Adams (Boston: Carter, Hendee and Co., 1832). A historical poem published by Adams after his tenure as President. Inscribed on title page "JB & E Francis 15 Nov 32". Includes errata page at rear. O. Original light blue wraps.

3) Letters of Abelard and Heloise. To which is prefix'd a particular Account of their Lives, Amours, and Misfortunes. By the late John Hughes ... (Philadelphia: Samuel Delap, 1775). Recounts the tragic 12th Century love affair between a tutor and his student. 16 mo. Rebound in contemporary marbled boards.

4) Constantine: A Tragedy. As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal, in Covent Garden by Philip Francis (London: A. Millar, 1754). Dedication addressed to the Earl of Chesterfield admits the play was poorly received. Advertisements at rear. 12 mo. Newer brown wraps.

5) The Sheperd's Wedding; A new Comic Ballet. ... (n.p., 1792). Marked in ink "John Francis" on title page and with a longer period inscription on following page. O. Lacking wraps.

Condition: All exhibit age-typical wear, including toning, foxing, soiling, creasing, uneven edges, etc. Collations not verified.
1) Evidence of water damage. One flyleaf with later paper (envelope?) stuck to it. Some pages coming loose. 2) Wraps mostly off but are present. 3) Old, probably period or early 19th Century inscriptions on flyleaves and title page. 4) Very well preserved for its age, though lacking original binding or wraps. 5) Deteriorating, particularly at lower inside corner throughout.
